All Eyes on Zimbabwe
With the resignation of Robert Mugabe after almost four decades in power and post-regime change afoot, 2018 is set to be the year Zimbabwe settles firmly on our travel radars. The Southern African country is easier to get to than ever, with increased capacity at Victoria Falls Airport: once the preserve of small aircraft, it now services flights from British Airways and South African Airways, among other international airlines. Beyond the terminal building lie the wonders of the falls themselves, and Zimbabwe’s star attraction: its wildlife. A new overnight train from Victoria Falls, the Stimela Star, takes guests directly to it in one of the country’s best national parks, Hwange, famous for its large elephant herds (imvelosafarilodges.com). Wellmanaged wildlife tourism is one of the ways Zimbabwe’s parks are ramping up conservation efforts: of the many camps opening this year is Singita Pamushana Lodge, with a heavy commitment to wildlife preservaton and community development (singita.com).
